The SPORT (Sportmedicine Program of Rehabilitation and Training) Clinic opened in 1978 and was the first major sports medicine facility in South Florida for the treatment of orthopedic and neurological conditions.

Shapiro received his graduate physical therapy education from New York University Medical Center and Rusk Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine. He is a licensed physical therapist, certified rehabilitation counselor and licensed worker's compensation rehabilitation provider.
